COVID-19 deaths data will be published next week

There will be a delay to the publication of the COVID-19 deaths data because of the Easter bank holidays. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) will publish the latest data on Friday 25 April. As a result, the data will appear on the dashboard on 1 May.

Rationale

Understanding rates and patterns of hospital admissions can help to inform planning around hospital pressures including beds and staffing.

Definition

This metric showed the difference in the average number of beds occupied by confirmed COVID-19 patients over the latest 7 days and over the previous 7 days.

This metric has been deprecated and no longer appears on the dashboard. Historic data for this metric is available in the API.

Methodology

This data counts people who are in a hospital bed with COVID-19 as at 8am on the day of reporting.

These figures include people admitted to NHS acute hospitals and mental health and learning disability (MHLD) trusts.

NHS England publishes updates on the second Thursday of each month. These cover data for the previous month.

This metric is calculated as the difference between:

  • the total of the daily number of beds occupied in the 7 days up to and including the most recent date, divided by 7
  • the total of the daily number of beds occupied in the previous 7 days , divided by 7
