Invasive group A streptococcal infection (iGAS)

Group A streptococcus, or Streptococcus pyogenes, is a bacterial pathogen that causes disease. This page provides information about invasive group A streptococcus cases in England. Cases are confirmed through local or reference laboratory testing of specimens from normally sterile sites (reflecting invasive disease).

These metrics are updated every two months. The next update will be in July 2025.

Headlines

Since 9 September 2024, there have been 1,655 laboratory notifications of invasive group A Streptococcal (iGAS) infections in England.

Cases of iGAS infection this season are following expected patterns and levels of activity. Incidence remains below the high levels recorded in the 2022 to 2023 season, and the total to date in the 2024 to 2025 season is currently below the level seen in the previous two seasons.

Laboratory notifications of iGAS infection so far for the 2024 to 2025 season (week 37 2024 up to week 11 2025) are within normal levels for the time of year. A total of 1,235 notifications of iGAS disease have been received in the season to date.
