Transfusion transmitted infections (TTI) surveillance

Last updated on Thursday, 16 July 2026 at 10:43am

This dashboard covers investigations and outcomes of suspected transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) in blood donors and recipients. The data shows confirmed TTIs, by year of transfusion, since TTI surveillance started in 1995. See the annual SHOT (Serious Hazards of Transfusion) report for more details.

Overview

The NHSBT/UKHSA joint Epidemiology Unit collates investigations and outcomes of suspected TTI incidents across the four UK Blood Services (NHS Blood and Transplant, Welsh Blood Service, Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service),  in collaboration with Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT). The year of transfusion may be prior to year of report to SHOT due to delay in recognition of chronic infection.

This surveillance data contributes to informing or evaluating policy changes relating to infection risk and provides assurance of the safety of the UK blood supply as a result of the effective measures and haemovigilance systems in place to reduce TTIs. Policies and procedures are constantly reviewed to see if any other mitigations are required.
