Entry title:
Lyme disease
Last updated on Friday, 26 June 2026 at 11:34am
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of certain infected ticks (in the UK and Europe, mainly Ixodes ricinus, also known as the 'castor bean' or 'sheep' tick). Common symptoms are a characteristic bullseye rash, fever, and fatigue. If diagnosed early, it is highly treatable with antibiotics, but can lead to severe joint, heart, and neurological issues if left untreated.
This metric shows the annual incidence rate of laboratory confirmed acute Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) cases in England per 100,000 population, disaggregated by sex and age groups.
The rate of annual Acute Lyme Disease is calculated from cases confirmed by the the Rare and Imported Pathogens (RIPL) laboratory and mid-year population estimates published by the Office for National Statistics.
These metrics are updated annually. The next update will be in April 2027.
The total laboratory confirmed cases of Lyme disease in England per 100,000 population. Figures are annual, but shown as at December of each year. For example, the figures for 2022 are shown as at "Dec 2022".
Infection rate by year data for the total laboratory confirmed cases of Lyme disease in England per 100,000 population. Figures are annual, but shown as at December of each year. For example, the figures for 2022 are shown as at "Dec 2022".

About
Data reported from 2025 onwards are subject to a revised surveillance process. This update in methodology may affect case numbers and should be considered when interpreting trends in diagnoses prior to, and after, 2025.
Rates are presented from 2017 to 2025 with overall acute Lyme disease rates per 100,000 population, calculated using the mid-year population estimates provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Population estimates for 2024 were used to calculate rates for 2025 as a proxy, as estimates for 2025 were not available at the time of publication.
Infection rate by sex
All laboratory confirmed cases in England per 100,000 population, disaggregated by sex. Figures are annual, but shown as at December of each year. For example, the figures for 2022 are shown as at "Dec 2022".

About
The disaggregation of data by sex and age does not include cases missing either age or sex information. The following cases were excluded from the age and sex rate calculations:
2017–2024: 55 cases were excluded, including 6 case with missing age information, 48 cases with missing or invalid sex information, and 1 case missing both age and sex data.
2025: 46 cases were excluded, including 3 cases with missing age information, 41 cases with missing sex information, and 2 cases missing both age and sex data.
