Syndromic surveillance

Syndromic surveillance is the process of collecting, analysing and interpreting health-related data to provide an early warning of health threats.
The data presented on this page are taken from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) emergency department, GP in-hours and remote health advice (NHS 111) syndromic surveillance systems.
These systems monitor the daily visits in emergency departments across England, number of visits to GPs during regular surgery hours for known syndromic indicators and patterns in triaged phone calls to the NHS 111 service each day across England.
You can use these data to:
- see current trends and levels compared to historical baselines
- compare the trends between different age groups and areas
You cannot use these data to:
- estimate total burden or number of ‘cases’ of a condition
- compare levels between age groups or areas
