Measles is a viral infectious disease. This page provides information about measles cases in England.
Cases are confirmed through either local or reference laboratory testing.
Numbers shown here are provisional and subject to change as:
more suspected cases undergo confirmatory testing
some locally tested cases are discarded after obtaining further epidemiological information or undergoing confirmatory testing at the reference laboratory
Measles case numbers started to increase in April 2025 with outbreaks particularly affecting London and the North West regions. However since mid-July activity has stabilised. We update measles data every month. The next update will be on Thursday 25 September at 9.30am.
Since 1 January 2025, there have been 742 laboratory confirmed measles cases reported in England.
50% (373 of 742) of these cases have been in London, 17% (124 of 742) in the North West and 9% (67 of 742) in the East of England. 93 out of 152 upper tier local authorities (UTLAs) have reported at least one confirmed case with symptom onset since January 2025, with the highest numbers reported in Hackney (94 of 742, 13%), Bristol (47 of 742, 6%) and Salford (39 of 742, 5%).
