Rationale

This metric shows the number of deaths from hepatitis B related end stage liver disease (ESLD) and/or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Monitoring hepatitis B-related mortality helps to monitor the impacts of whether individuals living with hepatitis B are promptly diagnosed, engaged with care, and have access to treatment when eligible.

Definition

This metric shows the annual number of deaths from hepatitis B virus-related end stage liver disease (ESLD) and/or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in England, per 100,000 population. This data is presented as a range with a lower and upper bound.

Methodology

The lower bound uses data from national mortality records where the cause of death is recorded as ESLD and/or HCC and hepatitis B is recorded. The upper bound links data from national mortality records where the cause of death is recorded as ESLD and/or HCC or hepatitis B is recorded to hospital admissions data where ESLD and/or HCC or hepatitis B are recorded and laboratory diagnosis data for hepatitis B to yield a maximum number of deaths attributable to hepatitis B related ESLD and/or HCC.

Rates are calculated per 100,000 population using Office for National Statistics (ONS) population estimates.

Caveats

Some hepatitis B related deaths may not be accurately recorded. Small numbers can cause large fluctuations in the rate between years. Changes in coding or data collection may affect comparability.
