Rationale

The data highlight the regions in England with the highest case detection rates.

Definition

The data illustrate the average detection rate of Lead Exposure in Children Surveillance System (LEICSS) cases per million children (0-15 yrs old) by region in England (participating laboratories are located in the South East, London, West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber).

Methodology

The average detection rate is calculated from the average number of LEICSS cases from 2015 to 2023 (the latest year) from each region as the numerator, and the denominator is derived from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate of the 0- to 15-year-old population from 2015 to 2023 (the latest year).

Caveats

These data should not be interpreted as an estimate of incidence. These data are collected from a passive surveillance system therefore represent an underestimation of lead exposure in children in England. The geographical variation in the data is more likely to represent variation in case identification rather than reflecting true regional variation in lead exposure in the population.
